A trip to Mesetas crosses two climates in a single day. You start in Bogotá, a highland city at about 2,600 meters, and end in the warm foothills of Meta, at about 532 meters. Packing for both is simple once you know what to expect.
Bogotá: cool highland weather
Bogotá sits high in the Andes. Days are mild and often cloudy, nights are cold and rain can arrive any afternoon. Many travelers are surprised by how cool it feels. Bring a warm jacket or fleece, long pants and a light rain jacket for your days in the city and for the early departure toward Mesetas.
On the road to Villavicencio you drop almost 2,000 meters. Dress in layers so you can take them off as the temperature rises.
Mesetas: warm and humid
In Mesetas the temperature ranges from about 18 to 28 °C most of the year. Mornings are fresh, afternoons are hot and humid, and nights are pleasant. You will spend most of your time in light clothes.
Rainy season, April to November. Expect afternoon showers and muddy trails. Pack a light rain jacket and shoes that dry fast.
Dry season, December to March. Expect strong sun on the rivers. Pack a hat, sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen.
What to wear for each activity
Rafting and tubing. Quick dry clothes, ideally lycra or synthetic sportswear. Water shoes or old sneakers that fit tight. Flip flops come off in the river. Swimwear under your clothes. A dry set of clothes for the end of the day.
Waterfall hikes. Closed shoes with grip. For harder trails, like Arenales and Santo Domingo, wear hiking boots. Lightweight long pants help against insects and plants. Bring swimwear for the natural pools.
Multi day trips to Caño Cristales. Long sleeves and a hat, because sunscreen and insect repellent are not allowed inside the river area. A warm layer for evenings and a power bank.
Essentials for any trip
Insect repellent for the trails. Sunscreen for the rivers. A reusable water bottle, since single use plastic is not allowed on our tours. A waterproof phone case. A small backpack for the day. Your passport or ID.
What to leave at home
Jewelry and valuables. Heavy cotton clothes, which stay wet for hours. Large suitcases. A medium backpack is enough for a weekend.
