Guejar River Canyon Rafting in Colombia: The Complete Guide

The Guejar River Canyon in Mesetas, Meta, is one of the least crowded rafting rivers in Colombia. TUREM has guided more than 10,000 travelers down this canyon since 2018. This guide covers what international visitors ask us most: price, difficulty, age limits, logistics and what to pack.

Where is the Guejar River Canyon?

The Guejar River starts in the Sumapaz páramo and cuts a canyon through rock of the Guiana Shield, one of the oldest geological formations on the planet. Our section starts at Puente Limón in Mesetas and ends at La Recebera farm in the municipality of San Juan de Arama.

Mesetas sits in the department of Meta, about 6 hours by road south of Bogotá. The town is a gateway to the Sierra de La Macarena National Park, where the Andes, the Orinoco plains and the Amazon meet.

Do I need experience?

No. Before you get in the water, your guide gives a full safety briefing, fits your helmet and life jacket, and teaches the paddle commands. Each raft has a guide, and a safety kayaker travels with the group. Our guides are trained in water rescue.

If your Spanish is limited, tell us when you book so we can plan English support for your group.

Minimum age

In the dry season, from December to March, kids from 5 years old can raft. In the rainy season, from May to November, the minimum age is 7. Minors always ride with a parent or legal guardian.

What the day looks like

You check in at 8:00 a.m. A van takes you to Puente Limón for the briefing. Then you paddle the canyon with stops to rest, eat a snack, spot birds and swim under waterfalls and on sandy river beaches. At La Recebera there are showers and your dry clothes are waiting. Lunch is served there before the ride back to Mesetas.

What to pack

Quick dry clothes, ideally lycra. Water shoes or sneakers that fit tight. Flip flops do not work. A reusable water bottle, since single use plastic is not allowed on our tours. A change of clothes. A waterproof phone case. Sunscreen and insect repellent.

Health requirements

Pregnant travelers and anyone who had surgery in the last 90 days cannot raft. Tell us about allergies or medical conditions when you book. Every participant reads and signs the activity data sheet, FT-01, before starting.

Getting to Mesetas

From Bogotá the drive takes about 6 hours through Villavicencio. Many international travelers book our all inclusive weekend departures from Bogotá, which include round trip transport, lodging, meals, rafting and a waterfall hike. See the Bogotá departures page for details.
